In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg

I love In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg.. 45 minutes a week on BBC Radio 4 and you know you will always learn something new!

The thing that amazes me most about these programmes is how Melvyn seems able to ask pertinent question regardless of the topic. He is surrounded by people who have spent years studying a particular subject and he always sounds like he knows what he is talking about whether it is the history of Mali, The Salem witch trials, X-Ray Crystallography or Rumi’s poetry.
Only once have I heard him flummoxed.. and must confess I was too.. so have a listen and see what you think about this classic discussion about Bertrand Russell and his work on Analytic philosophy.

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the influential British philosopher Bertrand Russell. Born in 1872 into an aristocratic family, Russell is widely regarded as one of the founders of Analytic philosophy, which is today the dominant philosophical tradition in the English-speaking world. In his important book The Principles of Mathematics, he sought to reduce mathematics to logic. Its revolutionary ideas include Russell’s Paradox, a problem which inspired Ludwig Wittgenstein to pursue philosophy. Russell’s most significant and famous idea, the theory of descriptions, had profound consequences for the discipline.

Philosophers Notes

I love these Philosophers Notes book summaries from Brian Johnson.  I came across them a few years ago and must confess I ‘tested’ Brian when I first discovered them. You used to get a free book of your choice to try and I deliberately picked one I knew well to see what he made of it.

I chose ‘Loving What Is’ by Bryon Katie as my freebie and was very pleasantly surpised. I first read the book when I was doing a course in Focused Mindfulness with Absolute Specialists and learned about ‘The Work’ which is a very powerful technique she uses.

When I read the book there were several key points that stood out, but when I heard Brian’s summary he also picked out something else which I hadn’t initially realised was so significant, but after using the techniques for a while it was clear to me how important it was.Watch Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

So.. I decided I liked Brian, his notes, and how his mind worked and signed up for them all!

Mulch Yourself

As some of you know I am a keen organic gardener and have lots of friends who are interested in permaculture la maca viagra. I read a fascinating article written by Flo Scott in Permaculture Magazine where she talked about mulch and bringing permaculture principles into her life to help her cope with long term health problems. I had never really thought of using permaculture ideas in this way but her article made a lot of sense. Are you making time for nourishing food, good quality sleep, supportive relationships, having fun and doing enjoyable things, restful breaks and time in nature and space to be creative? If not.. don’t be surprised if you struggle with work, family and other commitments. Don’t start beating yourself up about  your lack of mulch but try and make some time for those positive things.

Colouring and mandalas can reduce stress

I came across an article recently in the Huffington Post Coloring Isn’t Just For Kids. It Can Actually Help Adults Combat Stress. It appears that colouring, and especially colouring symmetrical patterns like mandalas, can help reduce stress.

For most of us we need to use our left brain more in our working lives.. this governs areas like verbal and written communication, logic, organisation and analytical thinking, whereas, the right brain is much more about patterns, colours, sensory input and intuition.  See here for a good summary of attributes for left and right brain from about.com websitte – but it real life there is a bit of overlap for most people. We need to use our right brains more for colouring and concentrating on colour and patterns and  this seems to switch off the left brain – if you struggle to calm your mind to meditate then why not try a bit of colouring instead.

You might be surprised to hear Carl Jung was a big fan of mandalas and saw them as a graphical representation of the self more info here in an article on Jung and mandalas.

Mandalas are symmetrical patterns that exist in all cultures and go back thousands of years. The word mandala comes from the sanskrit word for circle but mandala type patterns can be found in all religions and cultures. In our everyday  lives you can see madala type patterns in many objects such as floor tiles, fabric, plate patterns and church windows like the Rose Window at Durham Cathedral.

If you prefer the idea of a proper colouring book there are a lot more available for adults than you might think. Here are a small selection I found on Amazon.I quite understand many people have issues with Amazon and prefer to shop elsewhere. If so, have a look at Alibris which is like Amazon but nicer and full of independent booksellers.

Never Give Up – Arthur and Yoga

I read about the story of Arthur Boorman and his amazing transformation in a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/04/arthur-boorman-veteran-walks-again-yoga_n_1478847 viagra 10 pilule.html” target=”_blank”>Huffington Post article about his story.

Arthur was a paratrooper injured in the Gulf War and told by doctors he’d never walk unaided again. He had chronic back and knee problems caused by too many parachute jumps and over the years put on a lot of weight.. then he decided to try DDP yoga after reading about it in a magazine. This is a short film about his transformation.

This video was doing the rounds on social media a while ago and is just a reminder that incredible things are possible if you are prepared to persevere. You might need a tissue.. makes me cry every time I see it!

From Ego-System to Eco-System Economies: Otto Scharmer

I have mentioned Otto Scharmer in my previous blog post about U.Lab – Transforming, Business, Society and Self. The book on which the course is based is called Leading from the Emerging Future: From Ego-System to Eco-System Economics.

What Causes Wellness?

I first heard of Sir Harry Burns when he was interviewed talking  about health and inequality as part of the U.Lab course I mentioned in a previous blog.

He was Chief Medical Officer of Scotland for many years and is now Professor of Global Heath Promotion at the University of Strathclyde.

When he retired from his post as Chief Medical Officer this article about him appeared  in The Guardian  ‘We need compassion, not judgments about poor people’

There are a lot of sound ideas in Harry’s TED talk and it’s very refreshing to hear such a senior doctor talk about these issues. He ends with a quote from a Los Angeles priest which sums it all up..

What we need in this world is a compassion that is in awe at the burdens the poor have to carry, rather than stand in judgment at the way they carry them.

I am a huge fan of edx.org who offer free online courses on a range of subjects from many of the world’s top universities.

This course is one of them – U.Lab Transforming Business, Society and Self from Otto Scharmer, Adam Yukelson and the U.Lab team at MIT is by far the most powerful, inspiring and life changing thing I have ever done.
